Start With What Your Business Needs

Place Wi-Fi where the work happens

A powerful router cannot overcome poor placement. Wi-Fi weakens through concrete, metal shelving, walls, large appliances, and distance. Position access points in open, central locations rather than inside cabinets, behind displays, or on the floor.

A single access point may be enough for a compact office. Larger stores, multiroom workplaces, classrooms, or facilities with outdoor work areas may need two or more access points. The goal is usable coverage across the space, not a strong signal only where the internet connection enters the building.

Mesh Wi-Fi can be a convenient option for small spaces where running cables is difficult. However, wired access points are often preferable for busy commercial locations because each unit has a direct, stable connection back to the network. The best choice depends on building layout, budget, and how much network traffic your team generates.

Separate Guests, Staff, and Business Systems

Network separation is one of the most useful protections a small business can put in place. At minimum, create a dedicated guest Wi-Fi network that is separate from your staff network. Guests should be able to get online without seeing printers, shared files, payment terminals, or cameras.

For businesses with point-of-sale equipment, CCTV, access control, or smart devices, consider additional network segments. This is often called a VLAN setup. It keeps device groups apart, so a problem on one area of the network is less likely to affect everything else.

For example, staff computers can sit on one network, customer Wi-Fi on another, and cameras on a third. Look for switches with spare ports, access points that can handle your expected number of connected devices, and a router that supports guest networks, security controls, and network segmentation.
